Mini Rugby at West is the first rung on the rugby ladder for tomorrow's rugby stars, and gives boys (and girls!) between the ages of 5 and 12 the opportunity to learn about the game's basics.
The Minis are part of one of the biggest and most successful Junior sections in Scotland with over 240 playing members. We travel to many of the major mini rugby tournaments and festivals across the country and host our own tournament early in the season which runs from mid-August to mid-May.
P1s, 2s & 3s have lots of fun at training and play Tag Rugby which is entirely non-contact. The coaches are there to give children a good grounding in running, passing and catching skills and they ensure everyone gets involved as part of the team.
Contact rugby starts at P4 and continues up to P7 as players hone their ball handling and technical abilities through weekly training sessions on Sunday mornings and fixtures against other clubs both at home and away.
Rugby is a great game for kids of all shapes and sizes; however the off-field aspect is just as important as playing. There is plenty of opportunity for people to be as involved as they want to be in the club but what is most enjoyable is seeing kids form life-long friendships with their team mates. To strengthen this the P4s to P7s go on Tour every May and this is a high point for many players.
West welcomes parental involvement either coaching or as a volunteer. Please let your child's coach know if you can help in any way and they will be delighted to hear from you. Most coaches are parents who have undertaken the SRU's Foundation Coaching certificate, many have a long rugby history and all are really enthusiastic about putting what they can back into the game.
Don't worry if your child has never played rugby before - just register online here and let us know you wish to join. We'd be delighted to see you!
