West win the Premier 2 championship with a last gasp try
Batteries were running dry on calculators all week with the Premier 2 championship going right to the wire. With West having lost their top spot in the league to Selkirk the previous week they had to gain a winning bonus point by scoring four tries against Hillhead/Jordanhill to have any chance of regaining the top spot.
With Biggar snapping at the heels of both Selkirk and West the game between Biggar and Selkirk down at Hartreemill in Biggar held as much interest as the one at Burnbrae.
What added further spice to the day was that Hillhead/Jordanhill had to win at Burnbrae to give them any chance of avoiding relegation to the lower league.
This all added up to a nerve racking day for both players and spectators and the nerves showed in the first half of play. Hillhead/Jordanhill tackled everything in sight and attacked with such fervour that it was obvious that they would fight to the last. Although showing the pressure of the occasion and not playing to their best it was West that gained the first score after 15 minutes with a kick and chase by flying winger Ben Wright who outpaced the opposing winger to touch down in the corner. The conversion was missed. No further score in the first half.
It was the second half before West realised that they would have to play to their strengths and the conditions with the forwards standing up to the mark and keeping the ball in hand. Although Hillhead got the first points with a penalty by their full back Twaddle, West started to pile on the pressure and were soon rewarded when a penalty kick to touch resulted in a drive over try with the touch down by Gordon Bulloch. Good ball retention by the visitors saw increasing frustration from the home support as the other two tries needed couldn’t be scored unless they had the ball. This impasse was halted however when a driving scrum in the visitors half gave a half chance which captain Andrew Park took with a trademark wavy run clear through the middle to score under the posts – converted by replacement stand off Conor Davis. |

A volunteer is required to write match reports. Ability to write reasonable English and have a knowledge of rugby helpful but hasn't proved a barrier to previous volunteers. If the volunteer is willing to travel on the bus to away matches this would be great, but certainly a regular attendance at home matches would be required. Report would need to be e-mailed in to me on the Sunday post match. Robert Harley has been writing reports but is finding it difficult to write notes from his wing forward position. Contact Gordon at
